In the midst of ecological and cultural disasters wrought by global warming and rising sea levels, the question that the Polowatese of the Federated States of Micronesia and other residents of low-lying atolls in the Pacific islands are now asking is not whether or even when they will have to vacate their beloved homelands, but what their descendants will come back to in the distant future when the atolls are finally declared to be inhabitable once again. Digitally Archiving Ancient Futures (Ancient Futures) pragmatically addresses that question of cultural survival in the western Pacific, and raises another question pertaining to bigger possibilities for academic culture in elite public research universities in the US Midwest.
